Really? I guess I'm obviously looking at it optimistically but a coach with 16 years of experience playing in the NBA and 7 years coaching (with an NBA Championship and two 60+ win seasons, at that) seems like something that would immediately draw interest from recruits. Throw in the fact that he has been an ESPN personality for the past few years and you've got a highly marketable figurehead for your program. Again, I'm optimistic but I feel like a large percent of highly ranked high school basketball players (and their parents) would love to have a guy with that resume sitting in their living room talking to them about their future. Johnson has a pretty harsh style and I don't exactly remember him being beloved by his players when he was with the Nets or Mavs (after the '06 season). Like pesci just said, he can probably get away with that more at the college level, but his style will get old pretty quickly if he isn't able to start putting together the wins to back it up. I also don't think being a fiery and charismatic coach/TV personality necessarily guarantees that he'll start raking in McD's AAs. Talking basketball on TV and coaching grown ass men isn't the same as spending 18+ months pandering to a 16 year old and his parents to try and get him to come play for you for 6 months before he heads to the NBA. Some coaches just don't have the stomach for it and I can definitely understand why. Interesting. Well, since this is all speculation (from both sides) until it actually starts to happen, I'm intrigued and want to revisit your first post about going on a shooting spree if Texas hired Johnson. Let's assume Shaka wasn't on the table and Marshall already showed disinterest in leaving Wichita. Who would your top 3 choices be at that point?

Archie Miller Fred Hoidberg Jay Wright (he was reportedly contacted by the search firm Texas used and wasn't interested) I don't think it was a horrible hire for Bama, just not who I would have wanted for Texas in the same scenario.

He will be a great recruiter but coach on the other hand, i don't think so. He has coached in an NBA Finals and won 67 games in a season as well as another season he had 60 wins. The guy can coach. They achieved 67 wins and then lost in the first round of the playoffs. They have made the playoffs every season since that 2006 season except once. This is mainly in part to having one of the top rosters in the western conference. He then went to the nets, and in 2 1/2 seasons there failed to make the playoffs once or break past the .500 mark in any of those seasons. Yeah slam dunk fucking hire faggots

But I think we can take it a step further. Look at Phil Jackson running the Knicks. They fucking suck. Jackson obviously rode the backs of MJ and Kobe.

Pearl's success might dwarf his meager accomplishments. I doubt his contract is scanty, but Bama may be in for some diminutive returns on their investment. But for such a tiny window of availability, Bama can chalk this hiring up as a small victory.

He has plenty of question marks of his own.

Of course we aren't a juggernaut, but I don't see how you could say he has plenty of question marks...we're still a couple of years away, but it's inevitable that we'll be a top 25 program as long as he's our coach.

We'll obviously have to wait and see if Johnson is successful or not but it seems to me that TMB Auburn fans are the only ones calling it a bad hire. Imagine that. For the sake of comparison, Johnson's name was briefly mentioned as a possibility at Texas before Smart was hired. I would have gone on a shooting spree. That's because you're a moron

There's plenty to be excited about with AJ considering Grant is no longer your coach, but that coaching search was terribly botched.

Obviously we didn't get our primary target but it has been pretty well proven that it wasn't Alabama/our AD that messed it up. And since you don't seem to hate the AJ hire, what else did we do so wrong that warrants you saying the process was "terribly botched?" EDIT: As mentioned earlier in this thread, Smart wasn't a realistic option because we went for our number one and by the time that was wrapped up, Smart was off the table.

Aubs want so badly for us to be dejected about all this. It'd be sad, except that I'm used to this behavior.

It's an interesting hire that kinda came outta nowhere. Regardless, it should be an upgrade over Grant.

You may be right but I don't feel like we came away with bad press from this. Marshall saying no hurts but when he makes it a point in every interview to explain that our athletic department handled the whole process very well and that our vision for the future of the program is quality, it's hard to argue we got much bad PR from it. Then, we had a former NBA Coach of the Year admit he was very interested in the job. Again, it isn't Phil Jackson trying to come out of retirement to coach in Tuscaloosa but it is a pretty well respected and highly liked basketball personality. The aspect of the process that I liked the least was our AD releasing a public statement about Marshall saying no. That didn't seem necessary at all. All things considered, seems like a pretty decent coaching search for a guy with no previous experience in the coach hiring process. EDIT: I would also like to point out that the basketball program has already drawn more positive press in the past few hours than the program received in the six years previous. Whether or not he can win games at the college level has yet to be seen but he is certainly a beloved and respected basketball expert. Whereas your coach, although he has won games at the college level, is considered somewhat of a sleaze. Not that it matters at all. Just funny to me that that's something TMB Auburn fans would typically champion if the shoe were on the other foot. Auburn being so special and all.

Here are just a few of Pearl's question marks. Some are interchangeable with any coach who comes to Alabama. 1) Can he replicate the success he's had in the past at Auburn, a place with virtually no basketball history outside of Charles Barkley? 2) If he is able to achieve success at Auburn, will he be lured away by a blueblood? 3) Will Pearl be able to maintain recruiting success as one of just two active coaches who were previously show-caused? The NCAA will almost certainly be watching him a little more closely than others. 4) Can Pearl and his family be happy living in a place like Auburn, Alabama? That said, Pearl is a good coach. There's really no debating that, but how much he can accomplish at a place like Auburn has yet to be seen.

Fair enough. I don't really feel like that's an accurate portrayal of what we did but that's neither here nor there. Basketball season is over for most everyone anyway. Now we just get to see who wins the recruiting battle between the slippery swindler y'all have coaching down there in Auburn and America's sweetheart, Coach Avery Johnson.

I highly doubt it...would never blame him for leaving, but I believe he is completely focused on winning here and truly loves this challenge 3) lol ncaa 4) by all accounts they are happy and we'd likely happily let his son take over if that's what Bruce wants
