Holy crap at this deal happening out of nowhere the day before the season starts. My God.
Ken Rosenthal: Kimbrel & B.J. from Braves to Padres for Quentin, Maybin, Wisler, Paroubeck and 41st pick.
I am floored at the timing and.....BJ finally gone :chatzy:

It's really Kimbrel for 2 good prospects, Maybin, and about 40 million dollars after you offset us dropping Quentin.
Hopefully we can put the salary space to good use next year and not sign another BJ.

Closers are a very overrated baseball asset. They have little impact over the course of the game. Kimbrel, a historically great closer, even in his best season WAR wise in '13, was less than Maybin's best season in '11. Cameron fuckin' Maybin. IAC, it's likely we will give Folty the chance to prove he's a starter thru this season. If not, welcome your next flame throwing closer for the next half-decade. |

Not a fan of Maybin, nor does the minor leaguer excite me, Paroubeck is a total crapshoot. Quentin can just get fucked, he should finish out his career in Gwinnett if he cannot be cut before he even gets his bags packed in San Diego . Hopefully Wisler can be something good, but he'll need to be a 1993 Steve Avery to offset this with the baggage he is bringing with him in this trade. Hope we do something with that pick, but I'm not expecting much. As for the lynching, that definitely still needs to happen for so, so many more reasons than just this trade. Worst ownership group in baseball. |

No melt here, just slight irritation at amateur management making retarded decisions. Why didn't we find a way to lump BJ into the deal with his brother somehow? You don't trade away the best player in the game at his position for a bunch of scrubs, hoping 1 or 2 will maybe get to the point of producing a WAR of .3 or .4 someday.  |

I'm sure management hasn't tried to move BJ until this week. Get real, we've tried to package him in every trade we've made. And for the record, I hate Liberty Media but I'm not going to pretend like this move doesn't make sense. Kimbrel isn't the asset you think you're reacting to losing. Hes been very fortunate not to have any arm problems over the last five seasons and even if he stays healthy, there's no guarantee that his volcitity doesn't drop as he gets older. There's no guarantees with the return we got on him either but we can't regard Kimbrel as if he's Mariano Rivera. |

Closers are so overrated and it wasn't like Kimbrel was going to have a ton of impact on the season anyways. It sucks to lose him as pretty much everybody loves him and he's the consensus number one closer in the league. If Kimbrel turns into a Mariano type closer with the longevity then this deal will really suck as a fan. Can't overlook that getting rid of the albatross of a deal is huge going forward.
The thing I can't wrap my head around is the fact that the team one day wants to compete and then the other day wants to rebuild. The Markakis deal is something I still don't get.
