Regardless, my understanding was Bethard was going to transfer to Ole Miss if he was going to be in QB competition during the off season.
From what I have read, all the Iowa players wanted Bethard to be the starter this year, but the coaching staff was to stubborn to make a permanent change mid-season.
All information I have gathered on this subject was from reddit/cfb

Ferentz has covered himself in glory by giving in to the transfer threats of a player's daddy in the offseason, rather than declaring the job open for competition.
I'm ashamed that there was a time when I actually respected that guy.
Worked for us though...we need the QB experience. He might be less shitty than all our other shitty options.

The format for our spring game is four 10 minute quarters, everything is live except (I think) kicking. Our ST coach's process doesn't involve live kicking in the spring.
