It's a cult. Just like any religion. The difference is this one was founded in order to make money while many other religions were founded in order to control a populace. We tend to view Scientology as a fool's religion because we all know how and when it was founded. But give it a thousand years and it'll probably be just as widespread and commonly accepted as many of the religions today.

Just playing devil's advocate, how are they different from other religions that get tax-exempt status and try to "spread the good word?" Of course they're thousands of years younger than almost any religion you can point to, but besides that...seems pretty similar. Sure, it seems crazy to you and me, but so does the story of Christianity, etc. I don't know of too many other religions that require gobs of money to advance in your understanding of the respective faith. Well, not anymore. Those plenary indulgences back in the day sure seemed along the same lines. "You want you or your loved ones souls to move on Purgitory? Pay us!"

I dont think catholics employ as much slave labor either. I knew a lot of the stuff before watching it, but it was still fascinating to watch. You think those big, beautiful cathedrals all over the world were built by willing and well paid workers?

People don't have to pay it? The Catholic Church doesn't require it, but people still donate gobs of money (admittedly, not nearly on a scale such as scientology) I guess it is pretty crooked in the sense that it requires it to fully "understand" Most churches I know of aren't going to try to ruin your life if you stop going. Hell is real.

The doc stated that Scientology has had a declining membership in recent years, but at the same time has increased their net worth and have continued to purchase a lot of real estate around the world.

Just remember, all of you religious folks. Everything you laugh at and think is stupid and weird about Scientology and Mormonism, that is how we look at your religion as well.
We are all atheists, I just don't believe in one more religion than you.

To be honest, I think and hope you're right. But I said it that way for the sake of drawing a comparison between the modern accepted religions and those viewed by the general public to be ludicrous. People weren't always so easy to accept the tale of a zombie Christ as truth, either. Point being, they're all ridiculous. It's just a lot easier to call the guy on the other side of the room (or the planet) a fool than to accept your own system of beliefs is no more validated than the fool's.

In case you were wondering....yes, atheists can ruin anything. Sorry for trying to point out that religious delusion is everywhere and you're as much a part of it as someone practicing Scientology. EDIT: For the record, I consider myself agnostic, not truly atheist.

The Flag Building, also referred to as the Super Power Building, is the largest building in Clearwater, Florida. It is owned by the Church of Scientology and was built principally to deliver the Super Power Rundown, a high-level Scientology training course intended to train Scientologists to use all of their 57 "perceptics" or senses. The interior of the building contains training suites, course rooms, theaters and various devices intended to test "perceptics", including a time machine, an anti-gravity simulator, an infinite pit and a pain station.

In order of appeal:
1. Time machine 2. Infinite pit 3. Anti-gravity simulator 4. Pain station
Without knowing anything about it besides the name, the Pain Station was an easy choice for last. Just not a lot of marketability in that name.

What the hell is a pain station? Where did they get an infinite pit and why do they need an anti-gravity simulator? Can I take my kids to this place?

People only want to lambaste other people's religions when their own beliefs are off limits. And those same people can't see why that's an absurd way to be.
That said, I, for one, will attempt to only make fun of Scientology in this thread from here on out.

What the fuck...
According to the Church of Scientology, the building will contain specially developed equipment which "expand on technology developed by NASA to train astronauts" designed to exercise and enhance an individual's "perceptics".[9] These machines will include such things as an antigravity simulator, a gyroscope-like apparatus that spins a person around while blindfolded to improve perception of compass direction, and a video screen that moves forward and backward while flashing images to hone a viewer's ability to identify subliminal messages.[8] According to Marc Headley, who worked on developing the "perceptics", Scientologists will have to undergo testing on each of them. For Smell, for example, there are "hundreds and hundreds of vials of distinct smells that did not evaporate. You name it, bananas, peppermint, sunflowers, any smell that you can think of, they had it in a vial. Some of the smells were very similar, like oranges, tangerines, orange peel, orange juice, you had to tell the difference and until you could name each and every one correctly, you did not finish this perceptic."

I wonder if they have a million year contract if you are apprehensive about pulling the trigger on the billion year contract.

I wonder how many people converted to Scientology just to try to use the time machine.

I wonder how many people converted to Scientology just to try to use the time machine. Seems like a plan. 1. Convert to Scientology 2. Pay whatever exorbitant amount is required to use the time machine 3. Travel back to right before you joined Scientology. Spend your money elsewhere. Use those funds to reverse engineer that time machine. Go back to other time periods. 4. Prophet!
