AUBURN - Auburn defensive players say they have worked more than ever on tackling through the first seven days of spring practice. And that is not by accident.
First-year defensive coordinator Will Muschamp watched enough tape to know that tackling needed to improve.
" think we’ve done a very good job of emphasizing that with some tackling issues we’ve had here in the past leveraging the ball in the right way," Muschamp said.
Muschamp said he's seen progress, but that there needs to be more.
"We still have a long way to go," Muschamp said. "Believe me."

*** The Tigers conducted a 90-play scrimmage with three live punt return situations. Daniel Carlson hit a 57-yard field goal. "The defense got the best of the offense today."
*** On quarterbacks: "I think they did OK. I don't think that it was anything that stood out negatively that really comes to mind.
*** On defense: "We're going the right direction. ... There were some impact hits."
*** On running backs: "There was a lot of short runs but there were a few that busted."
*** DE Carl Lawson and OG Alex Kozan did not participate in the scrimmage, which was expected as they hold them out as a precaution.
*** "I like our kids' attitudes overall. I think all of them want to be coached."
*** On receivers: "Our expectations are extremely high." Malzahn said there were ups and downs today.
*** "I'm encouraged from the other side of the ball."
*** On Jason Smith: "He played a whole lot at the wide receiver position." They got the ball in his hands a few times and did some good things.
*** On centers Xavier Dampeer and Austin Golson: "The snaps have been a lot better."
*** Malzahn was asked about perception that Will Muschamp may have helped coach defense in bowl game, which could break NCAA rule for allowed assistants (nine). Malzahn was specifically asked about locker room at halftime, when Muschamp apparently punched a dry-erase board: "I wouldn't worry. He was just being a competitor on our staff. At halftime, he encouraged them." He said scheme was same as last year, not Muschamp's defense.

UBURN – The defense took charge of the first major scrimmage of Auburn’s spring practice. And head coach Gus Malzahn, the creator and guru of Auburn’s offense, loved it.
Auburn defensive coordinator Will Muschamp offers some thouhts to linebacker Kenny Flowers (Photo: AuburnTigers.com) “There were probably more good hits today than any of the scrimmages we’ve had since we’ve been back,” Malzahn said. “That was definitely a bright spot with a lot of energy.”
It was the first scrimmage on Malzahn’s staff for defensive coordinator Will Muschamp, the man Malzahn targeted from the moment he decided he would not retain Ellis Johnson after last season. If Malzahn was bothered that Muschamp’s defense, on this day, was better than his offense, it didn’t show.
“I was very excited with our defense, with our intensity,” Malzahn said. “They were flying around. They were having fun out there. There were some impact hits, I like to say momentum hits. Everybody on the sideline gets excited. Guys were flying around. It was very encouraging.”
Malzahn said the scrimmage consisted of some 90 plays at Jordan-Hare Stadium. He said junior Jeremy Johnson and redshirt freshman Sean White got relatively equal snaps at quarterback, rotating between the first and second teams. He said running backs Jovon Robinson, Roc Thomas and Peyton Barber also got relatively equal reps.
Defensive end Carl Lawson and offensive guard Alex Kozan, who missed last season with injuries, did not participate. Malzahn said they have both had full-speed work and were held out for precautionary reasons.
Cornerback Kamryn Melton intercepted a pass, according to his teammates. Sophomore safety Tray Matthews said sophomore linebacker Tre’ Williams had the hit of the day.
“Tre' Williams, whew!” Matthews said. “He flat-lined one of our running backs coming through the hole. It was a big hit.”
Matthews, who sat out last season after transferring from Georgia, said the difference in the defense’s intensity is striking.
“I saw what went on last year,” Matthews said. “It’s a big difference, I can tell you that much. And it’s getting better and better every day.”
It showed in Saturday’s scrimmage, Matthews said.
“The defense is looking really well,” Matthews said. “Of course, we have a lot of things to get better on. For the most part, the effort was 100 percent. Muschamp said if you don’t run to the ball and he sees you loafing, you’re not going to play. I love to see our defensive linemen run to the ball, even though they are so big. Everybody runs to the ball here now.
“We’re having a real good time. He’s a hyped coach. His intensity is through the roof. We are crunk out there, ready to roll on every play.”

What we heard from the inside about Auburn's Saturday morning scrimmage at Jordan-Hare Stadium:
Dontavius Russell has made a big impression this spring (Photo: William Rackley, Auburn University) Linebacker Cameron Toney got some work at the buck position on Saturday. Starter Carl Lawson, recovering from the knee injury that kept him out all of last season, was held out as a precautionary measure.
***
Auburn offensive coaches are highly encouraged by the progress of offensive guard Alex Kozan. Though he didn’t scrimmage Saturday, Kozan has had full-speed work in practice and looks to be on track to be ready to return to form next season. He was a freshman All-American in 2013.
***
Defensive line coach Rodney Garner said last season that freshman Dontravius Russell was ready to play at defensive tackle. With five seniors in the rotation, Russell redshirted instead. He’s made a big impression in spring practice. He’s been the starter from the beginning.
***
Sophomore Stephen Roberts, a safety last season, has moved to cornerback and had a good scrimmage on Saturday.
***
Jeremy Johnson is the clear favorite to be the starting quarterback, but Sean White is throwing well enough and playing well enough to make it interesting.
***
When Jason Smith learns the ins and outs of being a receiver, Auburn coaches believe he can be a difference-maker quickly. He had a good day Saturday.
***
Though neither has played in a game at the position, freshman Chandler Cox and redshirt freshman Kamryn Pettway have gone a long way toward easing concerns about the h-back position.
***
Sophomore linebacker Tre’ Williams, who had a hit Saturday that had his teammates talking, has battled a hamstring issue for much of spring practice. Once he’s fully healthy, insiders say it won’t be a surprise if he pushes presumed starters Kris Frost and Cassanova McKinzy.
***
Penalties were an issue for the offense Saturday. Getting rid of those will be a priority in the final seen practices of the spring.

Most reports have the defense winning the scrimmage yesterday. Offense was out of sync.
