That seems like a particularly stupid trade for the Padres. I'm confused for both sides, really. SD paid a big price for a guy it didn't really seem to need. Atlanta took less than Kimbrel should have gotten to basically free themselves from the last year of Upton's deal in 2017. Quentin makes $8m this year (+ $3m opt out after the season). Maybin makes $7m this year an $8m next. I can see how it's worth it to them to dump that last year of Upton. I also don't know know what the possible market for Kimbrel would have been on his own. |
