It maybe makes it unnecessarily complicated compared to old paper/pen style but is a lot better for mental math. Like, the people I know who are good at mental math developed a system that's really similar to common core when it wasn't a thing. I do something similar and it makes mental math so much easier. This is a big part of it but the mental math thing is only scratching the surface of why Common Core is awesome. The whole idea is to develop good number sense, or a good understanding of what the numbers actually mean and how they relate to each other. That's the entire goal of Common Core. You learn the actual concepts of mathematics rather than just memorizing algorithms that magically give you the right answer. It's the type of shit that people who are naturally mathematically inclined already come up with on their own. Now they're just teaching it to everyone. The point isn't to replace the algorithms with a process that's harder. The point is that the algorithms, while quicker and "less complicated" aren't beneficial to learning actual mathematics so let's not teach them. For example, I haven't used the vertical multiplication algorithm since like junior high because I have a good understanding of the numbers so I can do most of it in my head, otherwise I use a calculator. I could make up words like "algorithms" to make my point too but I'm above such nonsense. |
